100 Youth Graduate from Durham Regional Police Summer Program
On August 22, 2025, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) held a graduation ceremony for 100 youth completing the Summer Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative. The eight-week program included activities across Durham Region.
The YIP program, according to DRPS, provided opportunities for youth to engage in various events and community service throughout the summer. Residents may find these details relevant as the program involved fundraising, community forums, and skill-building for local youth, reflecting ongoing youth engagement in the community.
DRPS reported that participants in 2025 raised over $12,000 for Footprints 4 Autism and Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre. More than 40 newcomers joined the annual Newcomer Soccer Tournament. Over 400 youth attended the Ripple Effect Forum, which included 13 public safety organizations. The police stated that 96 youth aged 10 to 13 attended the Jr. YIP Camp. Additionally, more than 50 youth and 31 organizations participated in the CAN Conference.
The graduation ceremony featured performances by the DRPS Pipes & Drums and Choir. DRPS stated that the event included remarks from Chief Peter Moreira, Board Member Karen Fisher, MPP Lorne Coe, and a video message from Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. Two valedictorians spoke at the event, and awards were distributed.
According to DRPS, more than 130 of its members, including sworn officers, civilian staff, and volunteers, contributed to the program. DRPS also reported that 25 community partners delivered sessions for participating youth.
