14 manufacturing contracts awarded for first Darlington small modular reactor

Ontario announced Nov. 6 that 14 contracts have been awarded to Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area manufacturers to supply components for the first small modular reactor at Clarington’s Darlington New Nuclear Project. The province describes the planned reactor as the first of its kind in the Group of Seven.

The contracts cover equipment and materials including transformers, pumps and structural steel for the Darlington project. The reactor is the first of four units planned for the site, which the province says would together generate 1,200 megawatts of electricity — enough to supply approximately 1.2 million homes.

Scarborough-based Armstrong Fluid Technology received a $3.9-million contract to provide a pumphouse enclosure and pumps.

Celeros Flow Technology will supply the first reactor’s control rod drive pump. Company chief executive Jose Larios said the pump will be manufactured at Celeros’s nuclear facility in Burlington.

Oakville-based Hooper Welding is supplying steel for structural modules at the Darlington project. Toronto-based St. Mary’s Cement is supplying concrete and operating a high-density concrete batch plant for the project.

More than 100 Canadian companies have signed agreements with Ontario Power Generation to deliver the Darlington project, the province said. The province says 80 per cent of project spending will go to Ontario companies.

In 2025, Ontario approved Ontario Power Generation’s plan to begin construction on the first of the four reactors. Ontario is investing $1 billion through the Building Ontario Fund, and the federal government is investing $2 billion through the Canada Growth Fund.
