23rd Annual Farm Tour in Whitby Spotlights Agriculture Support Industries

The Durham Agricultural Advisory Committee (DAAC) held its 23rd annual farm tour at Kubota Canada Limited Headquarters in Whitby on September 5, according to the Region of Durham. The Region reported that more than 120 people attended the event, including elected officials and representatives from government, education, and public and private agencies. The program included a tour of the warehouse, an agricultural equipment showcase, and featured opening remarks by DAAC Chair Zac Cohoon and Regional Chair John Henry. Ian Affleck, Vice President of Plant Biotechnology at CropLife Canada, delivered the keynote address.

According to information from the Region of Durham, the purpose of the DAAC farm tour is to provide participants with insight into agriculture and related industries in the local economy, including crop production, employment on farms, and the roles of industries supporting farming and agricultural technology.

The Region reported that DAAC is a volunteer committee that provides advice to the Region on agricultural and rural matters. Since 2003, DAAC has organized tours of more than 40 farms and agricultural facilities for over 1,600 participants, according to the Region. The Region also reported that Durham is home to 1,200 farms, covering a total of 264,518 acres. According to regional figures, farms in Durham contribute more than $350 million to Ontario’s total farm production.
