Abigail Ansell Receives National Student Leadership Award from CICan
Durham College announced on June 25, 2025, that student Abigail Ansell has received the Gold level Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) Leadership Excellence Award for Students. Ansell is a 2024 graduate of the Fitness and Health Promotion program and is currently studying Sports Management at the college, according to the announcement.
This award is presented each year by CICan to recognize leadership among post-secondary students, according to CICan. Durham College stated that Ansell was recognized for her involvement as a student leader, varsity athlete, and community advocate.
According to Durham College, Ansell participated in several Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning (CEWIL) projects, including the Firefighter Pre-Employment Clinic, Paramedic Pre-Employment Clinic, and Varsity Clinic. The college reports that through these projects, she measured physiological responses as part of her work. According to Durham College, Ansell also worked as a research assistant and was involved with the College and Community Social Innovation Fund grant teams. The college stated that, in this capacity, she contributed to the development of simulations for Oshawa Fire Services that tested physical exertion among career firefighters.
Durham College also stated that Ansell advocated for health and wellness programs within the fire service. She participated in events such as the 2024 Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs Conference and the FireFit Challenge in Oshawa. In a statement provided by Durham College, Ansell thanked her colleagues, faculty, peers, friends, and family for their support.
Dr. Elaine Popp, President of Durham College, wrote in Ansell’s nomination letter that she “balance[d] academics, athletics, research, and community service over an extended period.”
According to the college’s announcement, Ansell is continuing her studies at Durham College and indicated plans to pursue further research and community work, with possible interest in a future career in sports media.
