AboutBreastfeeding.ca Website Launches as Online Resource for Families and Providers

A new online resource, AboutBreastfeeding.ca, became available on June 10, 2025, for families and health-care providers. The project is a collaboration between Ontario Tech University, the Durham Region Health Department, and Lakeridge Health.

The launch is notable as it provides a centralized platform for breastfeeding information, drawing from research and input from a variety of families. According to the organizations involved, the site aims to serve both home users and clinical-care professionals.

Ontario Tech University stated that Dr. Jennifer Abbass Dick, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, led the website's development. Project partners report that the site's content was co-created with feedback from fathers, Indigenous families, and young single parents. Materials available include printable handouts and posters with QR codes to support use in different settings, according to the project partners.

The project began in 2014 with the Durham Region Health Department, focusing on digital education for breastfeeding. Lakeridge Health joined in 2019 when resources were added to clinical environments, according to the partners. They state that about 6,000 users accessed these digital resources annually before AboutBreastfeeding.ca was launched, with international usage reported in the first weeks after the new site became available.

The organizations report that Canada recorded nearly 360,000 births in 2024. They also state that more than 90 percent of parents start breastfeeding, but fewer than 40 percent continue exclusively for six months, which the organizations attribute to common difficulties and limited access to clear information.

According to the project partners, the website content was developed to address common challenges, provide information about breastfeeding, and offer guidance on when to seek additional support. The collaborating organizations also state that health-care providers are using the website to deliver consistent information to families.
