Adult Change Tables Installed at Four Clarington Recreation Facilities with Provincial Funding
The Municipality of Clarington has installed adult change tables at three recreation facilities and upgraded a change stall at a fourth location. According to a municipal announcement on September 19, 2025, this work was funded by a $33,500 grant from the Government of Ontario's 2024-25 Inclusive Community Grants Program, administered by the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility.
The municipality states the project is aimed at improving accessibility for residents who require assisted changing in public facilities. The new adult change tables have been installed at the Courtice Community Complex, Alan Strike Aquatic and Squash Centre, and Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. At the Diane Hamre Recreation Complex, upgrades include a power door opener and an emergency alarm in the accessible change stall.
Municipal officials, members of Clarington's Accessibility Advisory Committee, and Todd McCarthy, MPP for Durham, attended an event marking the completion of the installations. Lesley Scherer, Chair of the Accessibility Advisory Committee, said the initiative allows people with disabilities and their families to participate fully in public life without compromise, as cited in the announcement.
Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility, said in a statement that the Inclusive Community Grants Program supports projects intended to create more accessible public spaces. Todd McCarthy, MPP for Durham, stated that supporting the independence and dignity of seniors is a priority for the provincial government.
The municipality also noted that external grants, such as the one received for this project, help support municipal services while reducing dependency on property taxes.
