AI-Integrated Opera Performed at Regent Theatre in Oshawa
An opera that incorporated artificial intelligence was performed at Ontario Tech University’s Regent Theatre in Oshawa on September 21, according to the university. The event, called Meladramma-AI, included live singers, dancers, a concert pianist, and elements produced using AI technology, as reported by Ontario Tech.
Ontario Tech stated that the adaptation was based on the original chamber opera Meladramma by composer Olsa Toqi. According to the university, the new adaptation was developed through collaboration among Toqi, Dr. Carolyn McGregor (Dean, Faculty of Business and Information Technology), Girolamo Deraco (President of the Puccini International Opera Composition Academy in Lucca, Italy), Dr. Andrew Hogue, and Amanda McEachern Gaudet.
The university noted each aria in the performance used AI in different ways, such as generating imagery and interpreting human emotion. Students from a work-integrated learning program, supported by Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada, contributed to the integration of AI tools and the design of the production, according to Ontario Tech. The university also reported that all proceeds from the event will support scholarships and opportunities for students in game development and interactive media programs.
Ontario Tech described an emblem created for the performance: a heart-shaped image with a robotic hand holding a natural apple, and a human hand holding a digital apple.
