Ajax Man Charged After Attempted Armed Carjacking, Police Say

A 19-year-old Ajax resident was arrested after an attempted armed carjacking at a residence near Salem Road and Williamson Drive East in Ajax on Sunday, June 1, according to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

DRPS reported that the incident occurred around 1 p.m. when the victim was sitting in a vehicle parked in a driveway. A male approached the front of the vehicle, produced a weapon from his waistband, and demanded the vehicle. The victim drove away without physical injury.

Police said the suspect fled the area before officers arrived. Members of West Division, along with the K9 unit, the Tactical Support Unit, and Air1, searched the surrounding area. According to DRPS, Air1 located a suspicious male and directed officers on the ground to his location. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was arrested after a brief pursuit.

DRPS stated that a knife, believed to have been used in the incident, was found during the search of the suspect. The accused, identified by police as Nidhish Mathisudan, 19, of Ajax, has been charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for committing an offence, obstructing a police officer, and failing to comply with a release order. DRPS noted that these allegations have not been proven in court.

Investigators are asking anyone with dashcam, cellphone, or surveillance footage, or with information about the incident, to contact the Robbery Unit. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers.
