Alstom to Provide $106,000 for Railway Engineering at Ontario Tech University

Alstom will provide $106,000 over three years to Ontario Tech University to support engineering students interested in railway industry careers, according to an announcement from the university on June 11, 2025. The funding coincides with the introduction of what Ontario Tech describes as Canada’s only English-language undergraduate Railway Engineering specialization, scheduled to begin in September 2025.

Ontario Tech states that the new specialization was developed with input from Alstom and other industry organizations and will start with four rail-focused courses for third-year students in Manufacturing, Automotive, Mechatronics, and Mechanical Engineering programs. The university also reports that a similar French-language program, supported by Alstom, will launch at Polytechnique Montréal during the same timeframe.

According to the university, $66,000 of Alstom's total contribution over three years will fund the Alstom Canada Women for STEM Scholarship. The scholarship is planned to provide six entrance awards of $5,000 each for female students with high academic standing who begin eligible STEM programs. The university states that recipients starting their studies in 2025-2026 may receive an additional $2,000 award in each of their second, third, and fourth years if the required minimum grade point average is maintained.

According to the university, Alstom will also provide $10,000 per year to support Ontario Tech's Student Enrichment Program during the same period. The university states that this initiative includes hands-on learning, mentorship, and recruitment activities intended to connect students with the energy sector.

Once Ontario Tech establishes its Railway Design team in the 2025-2026 academic year, the university reports that Alstom will supply $5,000 per year for two years to assist the team’s work. According to Alstom, the company designs and manufactures railway systems and services in Canada and internationally.
