Applications Open for DRPS Older Adults Police Academy in Whitby This October

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is accepting applications for its Older Adults Police Academy, scheduled for October 20 to 24, 2025, at Kid's Safety Village, 1129 Athol Street in Whitby. According to DRPS, the program is open to residents of Durham Region who are 55 years of age or older and able to attend all five days.

This initiative is designed for those interested in learning about police operations and topics relevant to older adults. DRPS states that the academy was first held in 2019.

DRPS states that applicants must complete an application form, sign waivers, and provide a background check. According to DRPS, participants will attend demonstrations, presentations, and have opportunities to interact with police units. The program covers topics such as personal, home, and travel safety; the Communications 911 Unit; K-9 and Tactical Support; fraud awareness and protection; power of attorney and last will; forensic identification; electronic crimes; use of force; defense tactics; and body-worn cameras. DRPS adds that tours of its facilities are included as part of the program.

DRPS states that attendees are asked to share information learned about issues affecting seniors with others in their community. More details and application information are available on the DRPS website.
