Bulk Pistachio Kernels Recalled from Hamilton and Kitchener Due to Salmonella Risk

Pistachio kernels sold in bulk at two Ontario markets have been recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination, according to a food recall warning from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued on September 9, 2025.

The recall is part of an ongoing foodborne illness investigation by the CFIA and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The CFIA said additional recalls may follow and that it is verifying the removal of recalled products from stores.

The recalled pistachios do not have a brand name or UPC code. The CFIA reports that bulk pistachio kernels were sold at Roua Plus Market, 140 Centennial Pkwy N, Hamilton, between June 1 and June 7, 2025. Similar products were also sold at Roua Food Market, 248 Stirling Avenue South, Unit 19, Kitchener, from May 28 to July 15, 2025.

According to the CFIA, food contaminated with Salmonella may not appear or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. The agency states that young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk for serious infections. In healthy people, symptoms may include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Rarely, long-term complications such as severe arthritis may develop.

The recall applies only to bulk pistachio kernels sold during the specified dates at Roua Plus Market and Roua Food Market. The CFIA advises consumers not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled products, and to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase. The agency further advises anyone who suspects illness after consuming the recalled pistachios to contact a healthcare provider.

The CFIA has classified this as a Class 2 food recall, and at this time, it is limited to the province of Ontario.
