Certain Organic Pumpkin Seeds Recalled in Ontario Due to Salmonella Risk
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of certain organic pumpkin seeds sold in Ontario due to possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled products include bulk Organic European Raw Pumpkin Seeds (product of Austria) sold at The Stone Store in Guelph between March 30 and May 7, 2025, and The Hope Eco-Farm Store's 1 lb Organic Pumpkin Seeds sold at 51681 College Line, Aylmer, from March 21 to May 9, 2025.
According to the CFIA, this recall is relevant for consumers across Ontario who may have purchased these products, as Salmonella contamination can cause serious illness, particularly in children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.
The agency advises that contaminated pumpkin seeds may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Symptoms associated with Salmonella infection include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. While most healthy individuals may experience mild symptoms, long-term complications such as severe arthritis may also occur. The CFIA reports no illnesses connected to these products so far.
This recall was initiated in connection with a recall in another country. The CFIA states that a food safety investigation is ongoing and further recalls may occur if additional products are found to be affected. The agency is working to ensure all recalled items are removed from store shelves.
Shoppers who bought organic pumpkin seeds from the locations and dates listed above are advised by the CFIA not to consume these products. The CFIA recommends discarding the seeds or returning them to the store. People who believe they have become ill after eating these pumpkin seeds should contact their health care provider. The agency encourages consumers to check their pantries and seek clarification from their retailer if unsure about the purchased product's details.
