CFIA issues food recall warning for pistachio products sold in Ontario over Salmonella risk
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a food recall warning on Sept. 26, 2025, for several pistachio and pistachio‑containing products sold in Ontario due to possible Salmonella contamination linked to an ongoing foodborne illness outbreak investigation.
Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious infection. The CFIA advises the public not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled products and to throw them out or return them to the place of purchase.
The CFIA lists the following affected products:
- La Brioche (866 Bank St., Ottawa): Petit Four Cookies (variable size; no UPC), sold from July 16 up to and including Aug. 4, 2025.
- La Brioche (866 Bank St., Ottawa): Baklava, including cream filled (variable size; no UPC), sold from July 16 up to and including Aug. 4, 2025.
- La Brioche (866 Bank St., Ottawa): Strawberry Cheesecake (variable size; no UPC), sold from July 16 up to and including Aug. 4, 2025.
- East India Company Ltd. (1630 Trinity Dr., Unit 5 & 6, Mississauga): Pistachio Green (5 lb; no UPC), lot 620/06-250.
- Baker Street brand Chocolate Pistachio Cake, 7 inches (1 count; UPC 8 24825 01313 3; codes 2035 and 2175), sold clerk‑served at Loblaws and Zehrs stores in Ontario from July 22 up to and including Sept. 25, 2025. These items may have been sold with or without a label that may not bear the same brand, product name, UPC, or lot code.
- Amore Gelato (71 William Street, Ottawa): Gelato Pistachio (1/2 litre; no UPC), sold from Apr. 28 up to and including Aug. 31, 2025.
The recall was triggered by findings by the CFIA during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. The Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating an outbreak of human illness.
Recalled products were distributed in Ontario. The recalling firms are Amore Gelato, Baker Street Bakery Inc., East India Company Ltd., and La Brioche. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to additional recalls and is verifying that industry is removing recalled products from the marketplace.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Long‑term complications may include severe arthritis. Young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.
This is a Class 2 food recall warning. CFIA identification number: RA‑78151.
