CFIA Recalls Al Kanater Brand Tahini Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced on April 20, 2023, that Al Kanater brand tahini is being recalled from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination.

According to the CFIA, the recall applies to Al Kanater brand tahini distributed nationally in Canada. Consumers are advised by the CFIA to check their homes for the recalled product and avoid consuming it. The agency instructed that the product should be thrown out or returned to the location where it was purchased.

The CFIA states that food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. The CFIA added that young children, pregnant people, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are especially at risk of serious illness.

As of the time of the recall announcement, the CFIA reported that there had been no confirmed illnesses in connection with consuming the affected product.
