CFIA recalls Alasko frozen whole raspberries distributed in Ontario and six other provinces over possible norovirus contamination

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a food recall warning for two Alasko brand frozen whole raspberry products distributed in Ontario and six other provinces because of possible norovirus contamination.

The recall affects consumers as well as hotels, restaurants and institutions, according to the CFIA. The agency also reported there have been illnesses linked to consumption of the products.

The CFIA said the affected products were distributed in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Quebec.

The recall covers these products:

• Alasko Whole Raspberries (frozen), 1 kg (UPC 6 95058 00205 4). Codes: PO#138602, LOT# SY25314, BB: 2027-NO-10.
• Alasko IQF Whole Raspberries, 5 kg (5 x 1 kg) (UPC 1 069505 800205 1). Codes: Lot: SY25314, P.O: 138602, BB: 2027-NO-10.

The CFIA warned consumers and businesses not to consume, use, sell, serve or distribute the recalled products. The agency said the products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.

In its recall notice, the CFIA said the recall was triggered by findings during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. The CFIA said it is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of other products, and it is verifying that industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

The recall is classified as Class 1, with identification number RA-82631, and the recalling firm is New Alasko L.P.

The CFIA advised anyone who thinks they became sick after consuming a recalled product to contact a health-care provider. The agency said symptoms of norovirus illness usually develop within 24 to 48 hours, but can start as early as 12 hours after exposure, and can include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps.
