CFIA Recalls Enoki Mushrooms in Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Quebec for Listeria Risk

A 200-gram package of Enoki Mushrooms with UPC code 6 976532 310051 is being recalled in Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Quebec due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to an August 12 advisory from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The product was distributed by Jacky Trading International Inc.

According to the CFIA, the recall was triggered by the agency's own test results. The agency reports there have been no illnesses associated with the recalled mushrooms at the time of the advisory. The CFIA states it is verifying that recalled products are being removed from the marketplace. The agency notes that the recall may be expanded to other products if the ongoing investigation finds additional risks.

The CFIA advises that food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Symptoms identified by the agency include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. The CFIA states that pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe complications. For pregnant women, infection can result in premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or stillbirth. Severe cases may be fatal.

The CFIA advises the public not to consume, use, sell, or serve the recalled Enoki Mushrooms. The agency recommends that recalled products be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased. The CFIA classifies this recall as Class 1, indicating a high risk of serious health effects. The agency does not specify the retailers that sold the affected product.
