CFIA recalls Kehar pistachio kernels in Alberta and B.C. over possible Salmonella

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is recalling Kehar brand Californian Pistachio Kernel sold in Alberta and British Columbia because of possible Salmonella contamination. The CFIA recall notice was last updated Aug. 6, 2026.

The CFIA warns that Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections, particularly for young children, pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

The agency says people should not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute the recalled products. The CFIA says recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.

Affected products include:

• Kehar Californian Pistachio Kernel (200 g) — UPC 8 20103 22666 0 — Codes: Best Before: Dec.2027; Production: Jan.2025; Lot # Jan 2025
• Kehar Californian Pistachio Kernel (170 g) — UPC 6 62834 79173 0 — Codes: Best Before: Dec.2027; Production: Jan.2025; Lot # Jan 2025

The CFIA says food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make people sick. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The agency says long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

According to the CFIA, the recall was triggered by the agency’s test results. The CFIA says no illnesses have been reported in connection with these products.

The agency says it is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of other products, and it is verifying that companies are removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

The recall is listed as Class 2 with identification number RA-82447. The recalling firm is Kehar Foods International Ltd., according to the CFIA.
