CFIA Recalls Rea and Bona Salami Products in Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario Over Salmonella Risk
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced a recall of Rea brand Genoa Salami and Bona brand Genova Salami from stores in Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario on June 10, 2025, due to possible Salmonella contamination.
This recall affects residents who may have bought these products both pre-packaged and clerk-served from deli counters, with or without labels. The CFIA stated that food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness, which may be particularly severe for older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.
Products included in the recall are:
- Bona Mild Genova Salami (code 5035 226)
- Rea Genoa Salami Sweet (codes 5035 226, 5049 226)
- Rea Genoa Salami Hot (codes 5020 228, 5035 228)
The CFIA said the recall was triggered by its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak, and there have been reported illnesses associated with these products. Marini Foods Limited is listed as the recalling firm.
The agency advises the public, as well as hotels, restaurants, and institutions, not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled items. The CFIA is working to confirm that affected products are being removed from the marketplace and noted that additional recalls may occur as the investigation continues.
Typical symptoms of Salmonella infection can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Anyone who thinks they have consumed the recalled products and is experiencing these symptoms should contact their healthcare provider.
More information about the recalled products and ongoing updates are available from the CFIA. The agency states that consumers unsure if they purchased a recalled item should check with their retailer.
