CFIA Recalls Sweets from Nepean Restaurant Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recalled several pistachio-containing sweets sold at Gwalia Sweets and Restaurant, located at 1460 Merivale Rd, Unit 5, Nepean, Ontario. The recall was announced on September 10, 2025, following an investigation that found possible Salmonella contamination in the affected products. The recalled items were sold between June 10 and July 11, 2025.
The recall is part of an ongoing investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak, according to the CFIA and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The sweets involved are sold without a brand name and include Rasmalai, Angoori Rabdi, Sponge Rosogolla, Halwa, Gulab Jamun, Kala Jamun, Orange Coconut, and Khopra Pak. All were clerk-served in variable quantities at the specified Nepean location.
The CFIA states that food contaminated with Salmonella may not appear or smell spoiled but can cause illness. Reported symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. The agency notes that young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems face greater risk from infection and complications, such as severe arthritis.
Consumers are advised by the CFIA not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute any of the recalled sweets. The agency recommends that any recalled product be discarded or returned to the place of purchase. The CFIA also advises anyone who has eaten a recalled item and feels unwell to contact a healthcare provider.
The investigation by the CFIA is ongoing, and additional recalls may occur. Gwalia Sweets and Restaurant is identified as the recalling firm. The alert is classified as a Class 2 food recall warning, under recall number RA-78052.
