Clarington among six Eastern Ontario communities to receive federal trail funding
Clarington is one of six Eastern Ontario communities set to upgrade trails and pathways with federal support, following a Nov. 28 announcement from Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada. The Active Transportation Fund will provide $3,459,339 across the six projects, with funding contingent on signed agreements.
Planned work includes rehabilitating, reconstructing and extending routes, and adding lighting, benches, signage and trail markers. The department said the upgrades are intended to improve user safety and give residents more options to reach workplaces, schools, recreation centres and local businesses.
Projects were identified in Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini Algonquin First Nation and the Town of Bancroft (joint project), the City of Brockville, the Municipality of Clarington, the Town of Cobourg, the Municipality of North Grenville and the County of Renfrew.
“With these investments, communities across Eastern Ontario will be revitalizing and extending their local trails, making them safer and more enjoyable for everyone,” Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson said in the news release.
The Active Transportation Fund supports building and expanding pathways, sidewalks, bike lanes and trails to support walking, cycling and the use of human-powered or hybrid mobility aids such as wheelchairs, scooters and e-bikes. A minimum of 10% of the fund’s allocations is directed to projects that benefit Indigenous populations and communities, according to the department.
The fund supports the National Active Transportation Strategy, which the department describes as a national approach to promoting active transportation. The federal government also launched an Active Transportation Online Hub with resources, project examples and information about federal investments.
The news release did not provide project locations, timelines or a funding breakdown for Clarington.
The announcement was issued from Ottawa on Nov. 28.
