Clarington Condemns Racist Graffiti at Visual Arts Centre
The Municipality of Clarington has condemned anti-Black racist graffiti found at the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington, according to an official statement from the municipality. Staff removed the graffiti from the facility after it was discovered.
The municipal statement reported the discovery and removal of the graffiti at the Bowmanville-based arts centre. The announcement included responses from local officials referencing the incident and its handling.
In a statement issued on May 15, Mayor Adrian Foster described the graffiti as "completely unacceptable" and said it does not represent the beliefs and values of the Clarington community. Foster thanked staff for quickly removing the graffiti and stated, "Hate has no place in Clarington." The mayor also said that Clarington Council is committed to "creating an inclusive community for all."
Councillor Lloyd Rang, who serves as Council Liaison for the Clarington Anti-Black Racism Advisory Committee, also responded to the incident, stating, "We in Clarington condemn this and all anti-Black racism."
