Clarington Council Advocates for Red Dress Alert System

During the General Government Committee meeting on April 17, 2023, Councillor Anderson introduced a resolution advocating for a federal alert system for missing Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people. The resolution noted that thousands of Indigenous individuals have gone missing in Canada, with approximately 77 new cases reported each month in 2022. It highlighted the success of the Amber Alert system in Ontario, which has a success rate of over 90% in locating missing children and vulnerable individuals. The proposed federal alert system would send emergency notifications to mobile devices when a missing Indigenous person is believed to be in danger. The motion was carried and will be forwarded to local municipalities, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), and local Members of Parliament and Provincial Parliament for further consideration.
