Clarington Council to Consider Ending Routine Train Whistling at Bennett and Cobbledick Road Crossings

The Council of the Municipality of Clarington plans to consider a resolution on June 23, 2025, that would stop routine train whistling at two CN Rail grade crossings: Bennett Road and Cobbledick Road, both located on the Kingston West subdivision.

The Municipality's notice states that this possible change follows upgrades to the warning systems and roads at both locations. The action would take place under subsection 23.1(1)(b) of the Railway Safety Act.

If the resolution is adopted, trains would not routinely sound their whistles or horns when approaching these crossings. According to the Municipality, train horns or whistles may still be used if immediate safety issues arise, at the discretion of the operating rail authority.

The notice does not specify a timeline for a final decision or further implementation details beyond the June 23 council meeting. Information on participating in or watching the Council meeting is available at www.clarington.net/calendar.
