Clarington installs first fast EV charger; network now totals 36 public points
The Municipality of Clarington says it has expanded its public electric‑vehicle charging network to 36 points, including its first Level 3 DC fast charger at the Diane Hamre Recreation Complex in Newcastle. The addition of 13 new points was announced Sept. 19.
The municipality said funding included $120,000 from Ontario’s EV ChargeON Program and $60,000 from Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) in 2024. The new equipment comprises 12 Level 2 AC chargers (240V) and one Level 3 DC fast charger (480V), according to the announcement.
All new units are in Courtice and Newcastle at municipal recreation and library sites, the municipality said. According to the announcement, the 13 new charging points are at:
- Courtice Community Complex: 4 Level 2 AC chargers (240V)
- South Courtice Arena: 4 Level 2 AC chargers (240V)
- Newcastle Memorial Park / Newcastle Library: 2 Level 2 AC chargers (240V)
- Diane Hamre Recreation Complex (Newcastle): 2 Level 2 AC chargers (240V) and 1 Level 3 DC fast charger (480V)
Based on the municipal list, Courtice received eight Level 2 chargers, and Newcastle added four Level 2 chargers and one Level 3 fast charger.
Municipal officials, including Mayor Adrian Foster, local councillors and Durham MPP Todd McCarthy, attended an event at the Diane Hamre Recreation Complex to mark the installation, the municipality said.
