Clarington Installs Rail Safety Decals Near Local Crossings

The Municipality of Clarington has added Look Listen Live safety decals on sidewalks and roads leading up to several CPKC and CN rail crossings in Courtice, Bowmanville, and Newcastle, according to a municipal announcement on September 19. The decals were installed to act as visual reminders for pedestrians and cyclists to be alert and cautious when approaching railway tracks, as stated by the Municipality.

The measure follows a municipal effort to address safety near rail crossings, which is a public concern for residents living or travelling near railway lines in these areas. The decals are intended to help increase safety awareness, especially during times such as Rail Safety Week.

According to the Municipality, the decals were provided at no cost to Clarington by Operation Lifesaver Canada as part of its Look. Listen. Live. Community Safety Partnership Program. Operation Lifesaver Canada states the program is a national effort, involving a partnership with HUB Surface Systems, that encourages municipalities to adopt safety measures aimed at reducing railway crossing incidents.

Members of Clarington Council, including Mayor Adrian Foster, unveiled the decals during Rail Safety Week, which takes place from September 15 to 21 across Canada. The Municipality noted that Rail Safety Week aims to educate Canadians about safety hazards near railway properties and trains.

Details about the Look Listen Live program and further rail safety initiatives are available from Operation Lifesaver Canada. Contact information for the Municipality of Clarington was provided in the official announcement.
