Clarington launches online snowplow tracker with five-minute updates
On Oct. 16, the Municipality of Clarington launched an online snowplow map that updates every five minutes to show where municipal roads were plowed or salted in the past 24 hours.
Residents can use the map to follow snow-clearing progress during storms and to see route priorities across Clarington. The municipality is asking people to check the map before submitting a service request for a missed road.
The colour‑coded map uses GPS data to display recent maintenance‑vehicle activity and indicate whether a road was plowed, salted, or both.
Residents can view whether roads near their homes or along regular routes were serviced within the last day and monitor progress across the municipality as a storm unfolds.
Clarington clears roads on a priority basis. Main roads and emergency routes are cleared first. Once those are passable, crews move into residential neighbourhoods and side streets. During an active snowfall, crews may return to primary routes before finishing neighbourhood streets.
As part of the launch, staff optimized snowplow routes to reduce duplication and improve efficiency during winter events.
Each road segment is marked to reflect recent service type—plowing, salting, or both—and the display refreshes automatically to incorporate new GPS data. Information reflects the prior 24 hours, offering a near‑real‑time picture during and after snowfalls. Because crews may return to primary routes during active storms, some local streets can be serviced later than others.
