Clarington Launches "Together, We Are Clarington" Anti-Racism Campaign
The Municipality of Clarington announced on June 5, 2025, the launch of the "Together, We Are Clarington" campaign. According to municipal officials, the initiative encourages residents, organizations, and businesses to take action against racism, discrimination, and hate in the community.
Municipal officials stated that the campaign was launched following what they describe as a rise in hate-motivated incidents across Clarington and Durham Region. The campaign, as noted in the announcement, is part of Clarington’s 2024-27 Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Anti-Racism (IDEA) Strategy.
Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster said that the campaign is a call for community members to report incidents of discrimination or hate. Foster added that residents have a role in "creating a community where everyone belongs."
Regional Councillor Granville Anderson, Council Representative for Clarington’s Diversity Advisory Committee, said that reinforcement of efforts to build what he described as a respectful and welcoming community is necessary as the population grows more diverse. Anderson also stated that more work remains regarding inclusion.
The announcement lists resources at www.clarington.net/BeTheChange about recognizing and responding to racism, hate, and discrimination. The campaign includes a public video showing in local theatres in June, personal stories from Clarington residents, and opportunities to take a campaign pledge at Canada Day events. Information about local businesses and organizations that municipal officials say support inclusive spaces is also provided.
