Clarington opens online map for residents to report extreme weather impacts; workshop set for Oct. 13 in Bowmanville

Clarington has opened an online “Interactive Climate Impacts Map” where residents can mark locations affected by extreme weather from Sept. 1 to Oct. 13, 2026, and the municipality has scheduled a community workshop for Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex (Hall 3) in Bowmanville.

The municipality says the public input will be used as part of its Climate Risk Assessment and Adaptation Plan, a project intended to identify local climate risks and potential adaptation actions.

According to Clarington’s notice, the map is meant to collect accounts of where extreme weather has affected daily life in the community. Examples include flooding, heat waves, wildfire smoke, snowstorms, and high winds or ice storms.

The municipality also listed day-to-day impacts it is asking residents to consider, such as games cancelled because fields are too wet, poor air quality that keeps people indoors, property damage following storms, trails flooded after heavy rain, and power outages.

Clarington says residents using the map can also view and support experiences shared by others.

The Oct. 13 workshop is expected to review feedback collected so far and discuss which actions should be prioritized, according to the municipality.

Clarington said the plan’s findings are intended to inform future planning, infrastructure investments and emergency preparedness.

As background, the municipality adopted a Corporate Climate Action Plan in 2021. Clarington’s 2024–2027 Strategic Plan also lists anticipating and addressing the impacts of climate change as a priority.
