Clarington Proposes By-law to Regulate Public Encampments
The General Government Committee of Clarington has proposed a new by-law to regulate encampments in public parks and spaces. This proposal was discussed during the committee meeting on March 4, 2024.
The by-law is designed to replace the existing Parks By-law, specifying locations where encampments are not permitted and providing guidelines for temporary shelters in designated areas.
Rob Maciver, Deputy CAO/Solicitor, provided an overview of the proposed regulations, emphasizing the need for clear guidelines to manage encampments. The by-law will also lead to the development of an encampment protocol for Municipal Law Enforcement, in collaboration with the Region of Durham and the Durham Regional Police Services.
The committee's introduction of this by-law marks a step towards establishing structured guidelines for managing public spaces in Clarington.
