Clarington purchases 20-hectare Maple Grove Road property in Bowmanville for future sports and event grounds

The Municipality of Clarington has acquired a 20-hectare property at 801 Maple Grove Road in Bowmanville, just west of the South Bowmanville Recreation Centre, for a future outdoor Sports and Event Grounds. The municipality said the purchase was completed Feb. 12, 2026.

Clarington expects to use the site for outdoor recreation and large community gatherings, and residents are expected to have an opportunity to provide input on the site’s overall vision in the coming months.

Mayor Adrian Foster said the property could be used for community events such as Canada Day.

The municipality said early concepts for the site include a dedicated cricket field, soccer fields and a municipally sanctioned toboggan hill. The preliminary list also includes a 3.5-hectare outdoor gathering space intended for major community events.

Other concepts listed by the municipality include a covered stage for concerts and live performances, connected trails and parking.

The municipality linked the purchase to its 2024 Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan, which identified a need to acquire a large parcel of land for new outdoor sports fields and space for large-scale outdoor community gatherings. The plan said that, at the time it was written, there was no suitable space within the existing park system to meet projected demand.
