Clarington residents gather to remember response to Bowmanville fire

Residents gathered at Waverley Place in Clarington on July 3 to commemorate the community’s response to the downtown Bowmanville fire that occurred on March 6, 2025. The event included participation from Mayor Adrian Foster, members of Clarington Council, first responders, local business owners, and residents, according to a statement from the Municipality of Clarington.

The fire on March 6 led to one death, displaced more than 30 residents, and caused the closure of 10 businesses, according to municipal officials. The event aimed to recognize both the impact of the fire and the community actions taken to support those affected, including fundraising and relief campaigns.

Displays at the gathering featured archival photographs highlighting Bowmanville’s history. Attendees wrote messages of remembrance for Kelli Jean Faris, who died in the fire, and offered support to her family using message boards set up at the venue.

The Clarington Board of Trade reported that it raised over $85,000 from more than 60 contributors through a business relief campaign to assist affected businesses. The Municipality of Clarington stated that the Salvation Army collected over $70,000 in gift cards and essential goods to help displaced residents and provided additional aid to evacuees.

During the ceremony, the Bowmanville Strong flag was raised, and commemorative pins were distributed to those in attendance. Council members representing all wards and federal and provincial officials also participated, according to the municipal statement. Clarington Council formally expressed thanks to residents and organizations that provided support in the aftermath of the fire.
