Clarington Schedules Monarch Butterfly Tagging Event at Samuel Wilmot Nature Area for September 13
Clarington residents are invited to participate in a Monarch butterfly tagging event at the Samuel Wilmot Nature Area on Saturday, September 13, 2025, according to the Municipality of Clarington. The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with participants meeting at the parking lot on Cobbledick Road. Admission to the event is free. If postponed due to rain, the event is scheduled to occur on Saturday, September 20, 2025, as stated by the Municipality.
The Municipality reports that attendees will be involved in tagging Monarch butterflies before their migration to Mexico as part of a bi-national citizen science initiative. The Municipality notes that equipment will be provided for all participants and that it may be possible to learn if butterflies tagged during this event reach Mexico.
According to the Municipality, those attending are asked to wear close-toed shoes and long pants due to the likelihood of encountering long grasses where the butterflies are found. The Municipality also indicates there is a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the tagging area within the Samuel Wilmot Nature Area.
