Clarington seeks feedback on draft Waterfront Strategy through April 30; open house set for April 23
Clarington residents can provide feedback on the municipality’s draft Waterfront Strategy until Thursday, April 30, 2026, and an in-person open house is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex (Hall 2).
The Municipality of Clarington says the draft strategy sets out a long-term plan for the community’s 34 kilometres of Lake Ontario shoreline, including proposed trail connections, shoreline protection measures and possible waterfront amenities. The municipality also says people who share feedback will have a chance to win a $250 VISA gift card.
According to the draft’s listed highlights, one proposal is a continuous Waterfront Trail linking Courtice, Bowmanville, Newcastle, the Agricultural Heritage Area and the Port Granby Nature Reserve.
The draft also describes potential features such as shade, seating, lookouts, multi-use trails, washrooms and parking, along with opportunities for small, seasonal mobile rentals and concessions.
On shoreline protection, the draft proposes plans to address erosion, flooding and climate impacts while keeping the waterfront public and accessible.
The strategy organizes the shoreline into five “Distinct Experiences,” including urban lakefront areas in Courtice, Bowmanville and Newcastle, and nature-focused areas at the Agricultural Heritage Area and the Port Granby Nature Reserve.
The municipality says major elements such as bridges, shoreline improvements, boat launches and buildings would only move forward after additional detailed studies confirm safety, feasibility, environmental protection and regulatory compliance.
