Clarington to Receive Federal Funding for Climate Adaptation Project

On August 22, 2025, Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities announced that about $5.2 million from the Green Municipal Fund's Local Leadership for Climate Adaptation initiative will be distributed among 70 climate adaptation projects in municipalities across Canada.

The funding aims to support the creation of climate adaptation plans, climate-focused asset management strategies, and community-wide climate risk assessments. According to the government, projects were selected following a call for applications in June 2024.

The Municipality of Clarington is set to receive $105,000 for a project titled “Resilient Clarington: A Roadmap to a Climate-Ready Community.” No additional details about the Clarington project have been released at this time beyond its name and the funding amount.

Several other Ontario communities were also selected for funding under the same initiative. These include the Regional Municipality of Durham, the County of Wellington, Grey County, the City of Thunder Bay, the City of Ottawa, and others. Each project focuses on local climate adaptation and resilience planning or assessments, with funding amounts varying by municipality.

A complete list of recipient communities and projects is available on the Environment and Climate Change Canada website.
