Closure Dates Announced for Ontario Coast Guard Stations

The Canadian Coast Guard has announced the seasonal closure of its search and rescue stations in Ontario. These stations, which operate on the Great Lakes, Georgian Bay, and St. Lawrence River, will close on the following dates:

  • November 25: Thunder Bay
  • December 2: Tobermory, Meaford, Goderich
  • December 9: Amherstburg, Port Dover, Port Weller, Cobourg, Kingston

The stations are scheduled to reopen in spring 2025. The Coast Guard states that the rescue boats used at these stations are not suitable for operation in icy conditions. During the winter months, search and rescue operations will be conducted by the Canadian and United States Coast Guards using icebreakers and other vessels as needed. Aircraft from the Department of National Defence and the United States Coast Guard may also be involved in these operations.

For emergencies on the water, reports can be made 24/7 at the toll-free number 1-800-267-7270 within Canada. If toll-free service is unavailable, the number 613-965-3870 can be used within Canada and the United States.
