CNSC Amends OPG Licence for Cobalt-60 Production at Darlington NGS

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has amended Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) power reactor operating licence for the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station (NGS) to permit the production of cobalt-60 (Co-60). This decision was made following a public hearing that included written submissions from OPG, CNSC staff, and 12 intervenors. The amended licence will be valid until November 30, 2025.

The timeline for this decision includes:

  • April 28, 2023: OPG submitted an application to amend its operating licence for Co-60 production.
  • October 23, 2023: The Commission published a notice of hearing and participant funding.
  • January 8, 2024: A revised notice of hearing was published.

The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to ensure health, safety, security, and environmental protection. The Commission operates independently from government influence and is a quasi-judicial administrative tribunal. The record of decision will be available upon request and will also be posted on the CNSC website in both official languages.
