Construction to Begin August 5 on Ajax Segment of Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit

Construction is scheduled to begin August 5 on the first segment of the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit (DSBRT) project on Kingston Road (Highway 2) in Ajax, covering approximately 300 metres west of Harwood Avenue to Galea Drive, according to Durham Region. The region states that work is expected to last 18 months and finish by the end of 2026.

The project is part of a 36-kilometre transit corridor connecting Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, and Toronto. Durham Region reports that, once complete, DSBRT will provide two-way bus service every five minutes along the route.

According to Durham Region, construction will include building dedicated median bus lanes, median transit stop platforms and shelters, road reconstruction, traffic signals to accommodate bus movements, watermain and sanitary sewer installation, new in-boulevard cycle tracks, wider and accessible sidewalks, street lighting, and landscaping.

Durham Region notes that businesses in the construction area are expected to remain open throughout the duration of the project.

Funding for this project is provided in part by a joint investment from the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and Durham Region through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).
