Diagnostic Imaging team named 2024/2025 award winner for X‑ray shielding communication project, Lakeridge Health says

Lakeridge Health said on July 7, 2025, that its Diagnostic Imaging team won the 2024/2025 Quality and Person-Centred Care Partnership Award. The award recognizes the Radiation Shielding Practice Change project, which updates how the hospital explains the end of routine lead shielding during most X-rays under new federal guidelines.

Lakeridge Health said recent federal guidance and scientific evidence indicate routine shielding is no longer necessary in most cases and, in some situations, can affect image quality. The organization said the project pairs the clinical change with patient communication tools so patients understand what is changing and why.

According to Lakeridge Health, the project team was led by Charge Radiology Technologist Jennifer Steininger, Administrative Assistant Jennifer Meier, and Patient and Family Advisors Dave Mortimer and Stan Phillips.

The organization said the team co-designed posters and handouts with input from patients and families. Lakeridge Health said the materials were written at about a Grade 5 reading level and included visuals intended to reflect community diversity. The organization added that the materials addressed common questions about the change in shielding practice.

Lakeridge Health said it also recognized three submissions with honourable mention. They were:

  • Lakeridge Gardens Director of Nursing and Personal Care, Jeanette Dindial, and the Resident and Family Council, for launching the Essential Partner-in-Care program.
  • The Mental Health and Addictions team, for the “Together, Best Mental Health” initiative.
  • The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism (IDEAA) team and the Emergency Department, for Sickle Cell Disease education and support.
