DRT Warns of Possible Transit Disruptions Beginning June 7 Amid Labour Negotiations
Durham Region Transit (DRT) has notified customers that possible transit service disruptions could begin as early as June 7, 2025, due to ongoing labour negotiations with Unifor Local 222. Unifor represents DRT's front-line employees and will be in a legal strike position starting on that date.
The DRT announcement states that a service disruption has not been confirmed for June 7, but reports that labour action could occur then. Riders are being informed of the situation so they are aware of potential impacts on transit service.
According to a statement issued by Bill Holmes, General Manager of DRT, the agency and Unifor Local 222 have participated in 12 days of negotiations to reach a renewed collective agreement. After these discussions, Unifor requested a No Board Report from the Ministry of Labour, and it was issued on May 21, 2025. The issuance of this report makes June 7 the earliest possible date for legal strike action by union members.
DRT stated that it cannot provide further certainty or assurances about possible service changes at this time. The agency said that more details regarding any labour disruption will be shared as information becomes available.
DRT is posting updates about the situation on its website for customers seeking ongoing information.
