Durham College becomes affiliate member of Canadian Nuclear Association

Durham College has joined the Canadian Nuclear Association as an affiliate member, according to a college announcement dated Sept. 17.

For local residents, the move signals the college’s intent to formalize ties with Canada’s nuclear industry and take part in national discussions about training and workforce needs—work that could affect programs and partnerships connected to the college’s Oshawa and Whitby campuses.

Durham College said it joined the association to collaborate with nuclear-sector organizations on education, skills development and long-term workforce planning.

As part of the membership, Robin Young, an executive director with Durham College’s Corporate Training Services, will serve on the association’s Workforce Planning Advisory Council.

In the announcement, Young said education plays a role in preparing workers with skills employers need.

Durham College also pointed to existing partnerships it says it has with Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power and Ontario Tech University, as well as regional nuclear suppliers.

Canadian Nuclear Association president and CEO George Christidis said the association is welcoming the college as an affiliate member and expects to work with it on workforce-related efforts.

The announcement did not mention specific programs, costs or timelines tied to the membership.
