Durham College Receives Grant for New Craft Beverage Research Equipment

Durham College stated on July 9 that its Centre for Craft Beverage Innovation (CCBI) will expand its research equipment with $118,000 in funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). The college reported that the grant will fund the purchase of a modular beer analysis system, the Anton Paar Animo 3100 Mobile.

Durham College noted that the new device will be used to measure input and output parameters during beverage research projects at the centre. The college said this equipment will be available for companies participating in research at CCBI.

According to the college, since 2018 the CCBI has partnered with craft breweries and artisanal beverage producers on research projects involving beer, seltzers, kombuchas, and other beverages. The centre's pilot brew line and laboratory equipment are used by businesses in applied research, such as new recipe and flavour development and scientific analysis of ingredients.

Debbie McKee Demczyk, Associate Vice President of Innovation and Research at Durham College, stated that the Applied Research Tools and Instruments grant will enable the centre to provide equipment for research accessible to beverage businesses. The centre is located at Durham College's campus in Oshawa.
