Durham College Revises Film & Motion Design Curriculum and Program Name
Durham College announced on June 17 that it has updated the curriculum for its Film & Motion Design: Media Fundamentals program. According to the college, the program now incorporates connections with Animation – Digital Production, Interactive Media Design, Photography and Video Production, Graphic Design, and Game Art.
The expanded program is described by Durham College as a response to changing digital content industry demands, which may be of particular interest to those considering skills development or re-training in media fields. The college’s updates involve changes in course offerings and access to industry-standard tools.
Program Coordinator Jennifer Bedford stated that the recent changes are intended to provide students with skills and experience for employment in evolving digital content sectors. Bedford added that the program’s new name is meant to reflect an increased focus on design and digital storytelling.
Durham College reports that students in the program use software including Adobe Creative Suite, Maya, Blender, and Unreal Engine. The college also says students have access to equipment such as cameras, lighting kits, and drawing tablets. The curriculum highlights motion graphics, interactive media, and emerging trends in digital content. Guest speakers, field trips, and networking with professionals are also listed as part of the program’s offerings.
Student Jayakrishnan Kovilakam described the program as providing both theoretical and practical learning opportunities, noting in a statement that faculty support and project work offered preparation for the field. Another student, Harkirat Kaur, stated that she was able to improve skills in photography, editing, and design through coursework and projects.
According to Durham College, graduates complete a portfolio and develop competencies that support further educational or employment opportunities in media-related fields.
