Durham Region Begins Annual Line Painting Operations on Roads

The Regional Municipality of Durham has started its annual line painting operations. Work will take place mainly on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., with occasional operations on weekends and at night, according to the municipality. The project is scheduled to continue until November.

Line painting is carried out on all regional roads, which total more than 3,700 lane kilometres. Select local municipal roads and some Ministry of Transportation Ontario on/off-ramp intersections will also be included, officials said.

According to the municipality, road markings help define traffic lanes and provide guidance to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians about which movements are allowed or prohibited. The work is done as a moving operation at reduced speeds, with follow-up trucks travelling behind the paint vehicle to act as buffers and allow the paint to dry. The paint includes glass beads to make the lines reflective, officials stated.

Durham Region asks drivers to be patient, keep a safe distance behind follow-up trucks, and avoid crossing freshly painted lines. Officials say that driving on wet paint may damage vehicles and reduce the visibility of the lane markings.

Residents can check the locations of active line painting in real time using live navigation apps, the municipality advised. More information, including real-time vehicle tracking, can be found on the Durham Region website at durham.ca/LinePainting.
