Durham Region chair urges 11 a.m. moment of silence; flags at headquarters at half-mast
Whitby — Durham Region Chair and Chief Executive Officer John Henry issued a Remembrance Day statement asking residents to observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. He said flags at Regional Headquarters are lowered to half-mast to honour those who have served and continue to serve Canada in times of war, conflict and peace.
The statement sets out the Region’s observance for November 11: a pause at 11 a.m., flags at Regional Headquarters at half-mast, and recognition of military families. Henry also noted the role of local Legion branches, saying they support veterans, active-duty members and their families.
“This morning at 11 a.m., I encourage you to observe a moment of silence,” Henry said in the statement issued from Whitby.
He said the poppy is worn as a symbol of remembrance, gratitude and hope for a peaceful future, representing lives lost and wounds suffered—visible and invisible.
Henry credited local Legion branches with leading advocacy for veterans and active-duty members and said their work supports communities across Canada.
He added that the day is also an opportunity to recognize the families who support service members and the generations who continue that commitment. He asked residents to join him in honouring members of the Canadian Armed Forces for their service.
The statement was posted on the Durham Region website and issued on behalf of the Regional Chair and CEO.
