Durham Region Clarifies Cost and Funding for Headquarters Entrance Replacement
A radio report stated that replacing the main entrance revolving door system at Durham Region's headquarters in Whitby cost property taxpayers more than $1 million. The Region of Durham issued a clarification on July 21, 2025, regarding the costs and funding sources for the project.
According to the Region, the sliding door system at the headquarters had reached the end of its 20-year life expectancy. Officials stated that the doors led to energy loss during extreme temperatures and created health and safety concerns in a high-traffic area.
Funding for the replacement project came from three sources, as stated by the Region: $403,000 from the federal Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, $249,000 reallocated from an existing capital maintenance project, and $249,000 in additional financing from the Region. The total identified funding amounts to $901,000.
The replacement process involved a public request for proposals. The new entry system, which includes two accessible swing doors along with updated HVAC and security features, was installed in 2024. Regional officials said the project aimed to reduce operating costs and improve energy efficiency, security, and traffic flow at the building's main entrance.
