Durham Region ends TeleRead self-reporting, switches to meter-reader water readings as of March 1

Durham Region ended its TeleRead customer self-reporting water meter card program on March 1 and began having meter readers collect water meter readings for more than 181,000 residential municipal water supply customers.

For households on the municipal water system, the change means residents no longer need to submit their own water meter readings.

Durham Region said meter readers will use radio-frequency (RF) or touchpad-enabled water meters to collect water-usage data without entering homes. The Region also said the change will reduce the number of estimated water bills.

TeleRead began in 1976, according to the Region, when customers were asked to supply readings through a self-assessment meter card program.

More information about water billing is available on Durham Region’s website at durham.ca/WaterBilling.
