Durham Region Health Department Launches Passport Adventure Initiative for Recreation and Parks Month

Durham Region Health Department, in partnership with local municipalities and Durham Tourism, has launched the passport adventure initiative for the second year during Recreation and Parks Month in June. The program includes free events such as public swimming, yoga by the lake, Zumba classes, and new activities like baseball, horseshoes, netball, and rollerblading or skating. According to the Health Department, residents who attend at least three free events are eligible for a draw to win a new bicycle.

Recreation and Parks Month carries the theme “Community Thrives Here.” The initiative offers events throughout June, with the stated goal of encouraging participation in recreational activities across Durham Region, according to the Health Department.

Tara Wheeler, a public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department, said, “Recreation and Parks Month is a wonderful opportunity for residents to connect with their community and embrace healthy, active living.” Wheeler noted the addition of new events this year and the participation of community members in last year’s passport adventure.

A digital version of the passport, as well as a calendar of events, is available at durhamtourism.ca/RecAndParksMonth. Residents are also invited by the Health Department to join the conversation on social media using the hashtag #JRPM2025.
