Durham Region Issues Safety Tips as Motorcycle Season Begins

Motorcycle season has begun in Durham Region. According to the region, about 63 per cent of motorcycle collisions result in injury or death.

The high risk associated with motorcycle collisions makes road safety a concern for riders and other drivers. Durham Region states that all road users share responsibility for keeping motorcyclists safe.

The region has issued several safety tips for motorcyclists:

  • Inspect your bike before every ride
  • Wear appropriate safety gear
  • Stay calm and alert when riding
  • Pay attention to surroundings
  • Obey traffic laws

For drivers of other vehicles, Durham Region recommends the following:

  • Check mirrors and the surrounding area, as motorcycles can be more difficult to spot among larger vehicles
  • Maintain a safe following distance behind motorcycles
  • Do not assume a motorcycle is changing lanes if it is shifting position
  • Exercise caution at intersections and watch for motorcycles

According to Durham Region, these recommendations are part of broader efforts under the Durham Vision Zero Strategic Road Safety Action Plan, which aims to improve safety for all road users in the area.
