Durham Region Named to World's Top7 Intelligent Communities for Fourth Year
Durham Region has been named one of the world's Top7 Intelligent Communities for the fourth consecutive year, according to an announcement on June 19 by regional officials. The recognition is awarded annually by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF).
The ICF selects the Top7 Intelligent Communities based on criteria that include broadband deployment and use, workforce development, innovation, and digital inclusion. This designation follows Durham Region's full intelligent community certification from the ICF in 2024, as stated by regional officials. The annual recognition aims to highlight communities using technology and innovation to benefit their residents.
According to the Region, several programs contributed to the recognition, such as Durham OneNet, Your Durham, and the 311 service. Regional officials stated these initiatives are intended to improve broadband access and service delivery for residents. The Region also highlighted collaboration with local organizations, including the Durham Region Intelligent Community Consortium and the Durham Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Forum, and partnerships with post-secondary institutions such as Durham College, Ontario Tech University, and Trent University Durham GTA.
Other communities recognized by the ICF as Top7 Intelligent Communities this year are located in Canada, Brazil, the United States, Turkey, and Spain. According to the Region, the ICF will announce the Intelligent Community of the Year in December.
