Durham Region Reminds Drivers of One-Metre Passing Rule for Cyclists
Drivers are required by the Highway Traffic Act to leave at least one metre of space when passing a bicycle or e-bike traveling in the same direction. On July 14, the Regional Municipality of Durham issued a reminder to residents about this rule.
The one-metre passing law applies to all drivers operating vehicles alongside cyclists on Durham Region roads and is intended to reduce the risk of collisions, according to the regional government.
According to the Region, drivers may cross the centre line to provide the necessary space if it is safe and permitted by road rules. If there is not enough space to pass safely, the Region advises drivers to wait behind the cyclist until passing is possible at the required distance.
Durham Region states that cyclists do not have to maintain a one-metre gap from vehicles but are required to obey all traffic rules. The Region further advises cyclists to remain aware of their surroundings, particularly when being passed by vehicles, and to maintain a safe position on the road.
The reminder forms part of the Region’s Durham Vision Zero initiative, which, according to the regional government, is a local road safety program established to reduce collisions, fatalities, and injuries.
